Being an Educator

Being a Barnardos KidStart educator

As a Barnardos KidStart Educator, you’ll work in your own home providing childcare for up to four children under five years.

Every day is different

Every day as an educator will be different – you’ll provide a range of fun and educational activities shaped by the children’s interests and what they enjoy doing. This could involve ordinary family activities like baking, gardening and visits to places out in the community. We’ll give you all the training you need and great ongoing support, and you’ll pay no course fees when you enrol in the NZQA level 4 Open Polytechnic Certificate in Early Childhood Practice.

Become part of the Barnardos KidStart childcare family

You’ll have a close relationship with the families of the children in your care. It’s great to have a conversation with them at the start or end of the day about their child’s progress and wellbeing, and to find out more about their child’s interests and the learning that’s happening at home. You’ll also record each child’s learning and progress in their learning journal. Families find this a great way to see what their child has been doing and how they’re developing.

Choose who you work with

Your visiting teacher will introduce you to families who are looking for childcare – because having a great relationship with the family is so important, the choice of who you work with is yours. Our educators find that the children in their care become part of the family and they often stay in touch once they’ve left care.

Days and hours

You can choose the days and hours that suit you and your family.
