Over the past 20 years, the ozone layer above New Zealand which helps screen us from the sun's powerful UV rays has decreased by a tenth! This leaves us Kiwis even more vulnerable to sunburn, wrinkly skin and eye damage. One of the main causes of melanomas is sunburn, and research indicates a strong link between childhood sunburn and skin cancer in later life.
With our passion for the great outdoors, it's even more important to learn from a very early age about the harsh New Zealand sun and its consequences. The more we make it a ritual before our children head outdoors to apply sunscreen and put on a hat, the more it will become the norm for all of us.
