Porirua Early Learning Centre

Porirua Early Learning Centre

24 Mungavin Avenue, Porirua, Wellington

Kidstart Porirua is our tamariki’s home away from home, deeply rooted in our Porirua community. In our centre, your child will be empowered to develop independence and make their own discoveries, at their own pace.

Porirua Early Learning Centre was awarded the Heart Foundation Healthy Heart Award in 2017 for creating an environment that promotes healthy eating and physical activity.

We want our place to feel like a home where children can relax and have time to explore the various indoors and outdoors activities in a calm, warm, joyful and peaceful atmosphere. You will find natural resources for our pretend play area, comfortable armchairs and sofa for children and whānau as well, beautiful objects for them to play with. We acknowledge Māori as Tangata Whenua and we have many cultures represented in our centre: Samoan, Māori, Cook Island, Fiji, Kiribati, French, etc. We welcome every opportunity to learn from and with each other about our cultures and languages.

We are a mixed aged centre with children from 2 years old to 5 years old and we strongly believe in relationships. We believe that no matter how little a person is, anyone can contribute to their community. So, for instance, during school terms, we take our 4 years old on a weekly visit to the local primary school to listen to a story and get familiar with the settings. We also take all the children on our monthly visit to the local rest home to sing to and with the residents. We are developing a community garden for our parents and whānau on one side of our centre and our tamariki help caring for the fruits and vegetables that will be used by our cook to prepare their meals.

We have a large outdoor area that offers a sandpit and various climbing equipment, but also a place to use our balance bikes, balls, skipping ropes etc. We encourage the children to take part in our gardening activities and look after our vegetables, flowers, several fruit trees and our worm farm. Music is an important part of our program: children and teachers sing daily, we also have games of rakau sticks and poi.

Our qualified, experienced and registered teachers follow the children’s interests to extend their learning. Your child will be nurtured and kindly challenged to become inquisitive, self-driven explorers in charge of their own learning, while being supported to develop their ability to concentrate for longer periods of time. You will be kept informed through your child’s learning stories on Story Park or their profile book, whānau events and daily conversations. We have an “open door” policy: we welcome whānau who wish to spend time with their children and we value all parent input.

We are working towards the Heart Foundation Gold Award: our cook provides nutritious morning, afternoon tea and cooked lunch 4 days a week. Breakfast is also available every day for those “hard to get up” mornings. We are able to cater for special dietary, religious or cultural needs. Our tamariki are also encouraged to take part in baking our daily batch of scones all by themselves: this is one example of how we support your child to learn some gross motor, fine motor skills, as well as literacy, science and pre-maths skills while contributing and having fun.

We encourage you to come and see by yourself what makes our place special.
